Description

This building, formerly an inn known as "The Flying Chariot," has a 16th-century origin but is largely of 17th-century design, particularly noticeable in its elaborate ornamental front façade. Constructed with timber framing and plaster, the building has tiled roofs. Significant remnants of floral pargeting (decorative plasterwork) remain on the front and part of the south side. Elaborate carved wooden details adorn the entire front, along with barge boards on the north side. The eaves board is carved and displays the date 1656 above the north oriel window. There is a three-window range, with each oriel window supported by three brackets carved with a male head, reputedly depicting Charles I, with the exception of one oriel. Six similar brackets support the eaves board. The oriel windows each have five lights with a transom, and many original leaded casements remain. The ground floor features a doorway with a heavy carved pediment supported by brackets carved as lions, and a six-panel door. A large rectangular chimney stack is located on the south part of the front block. At the rear, a two-story oriel window projects from ground level. The interior contains some good detailing, including painted elements. The building is part of a group with Nos 90 to 118 (even).
