Description
The Church of St Peter is a notable 14th and 15th century church built from flint and stone. It features a tall 15th century west tower that has a chequerwork embattled parapet and angle buttresses with tabled offsets, along with inset flint chequerwork on the faces. The south aisle is topped with an embattled parapet that includes carved ornamentation. The south porch also boasts a richly decorated embattled parapet, flint flushwork panels, and three ogee-headed niches. The south doorway is adorned with fleurons and shields. Inside, the nave showcases a remarkable 14th century collar purlin roof supported by four-way braced crown posts, which have moulded caps and bases on moulded and carved tie beams. The south aisle features a fine 15th century roof with moulded and carved beams and arched braces. The interior includes a 14th century altar tomb with a carved stone canopy and an impressive 18th century tomb dedicated to Jacob Harvey of Pepper's Hall, who died in 1723, created by N Royce of Bury St Edmunds. The church is recognized for its architectural, historical, and topographical significance.
