Description

Thorington Hall is a fine 17th-century timber-framed and plastered house located on Thorington Street in Stoke-by-Nayland. It features original details and has cross wings at both the north-east and south-west ends, with a staircase wing that rises above eaves level on the south-east front. The north-east wing displays a jettied gable on both fronts, complete with a carved bressummer and bargeboards. The south-west wing includes an oriel window on the upper storey, supported by four shaped brackets, and also has a jettied gable with similar carved details. Most windows are mullioned and transomed casements with leaded lights, some retaining 17th-century fastenings, while a few original windows have been blocked. On the south-east front, there is a modern glazed door framed by an 18th-century doorcase featuring a scroll pediment on brackets. The roofs are primarily gabled, with some hipped, and are covered in old tiles. Two heavy chimney stacks are present, one particularly notable with six grouped octagonal shafts, spurred caps, and moulded bases. Inside, the house boasts many fine 17th-century features, including an early 17th-century staircase with turned balusters and newel posts adorned with carved finials and pendants, as well as additional 17th-century and 18th-century staircases, fireplaces, and casement fittings.
