Description
Old Buckenham Hall School, formerly known as Brettenham Hall, is a large red brick mansion likely dating back to the 16th century, but it underwent extensive additions or rebuilding in the early 19th century. This work was done in preparation for the residence of Joseph Bonaparte, the Ex-King of Naples and Spain, who was the brother of the first Napoleon. The mansion is set within a 150-acre park and is approached via an avenue of oak trees.
The south front of the building is mainly two storeys high, while the north front features various blocks that rise to two, three, and four storeys, adorned with parapets and Dutch gables. On the west end of the south front, there is a large bay with three windows, a panelled parapet, and a ground storey loggia supported by seven plain Roman Doric columns, topped with a triglyph frieze. The north-east front is of an earlier date, also featuring a parapet and Dutch gable. The east wing and tower on the north front were constructed in 1903. Most of the windows are double-hung sashes with glazing bars, and there are several chimney stacks with octagonal shafts, moulded caps, and bases.
