Description

Sawyer's Farmhouse is a Grade II* listed building located in the parish of Bures St Mary, approached from a farm road leading off Upper Road in Little Cornard. The farmhouse features a late 15th-century timber-framed hall range, with a 16th-century cross wing at the east end and a later timber-framed and plastered wing at the west end, which extends to the south and dates from the late 17th or early 18th century.

The hall range and east wing display exposed framing with plaster infill. A floor and chimney stacks were added to the hall house in the 16th century. Inside, there are two cambered tie-beams with octagonal crown posts that have moulded caps and bases, along with four-way braces. An interesting smoke bay arrangement for the smoke outlet features two closely spaced original trusses that are plastered, with their inner sides heavily encrusted with soot, while the rest of the hall timbers remain soot-free. One of the later chimney stacks has been inserted within this bay.

The interior includes a straight flight staircase, with most of the quarter log tread risers possibly being original. The 16th-century cross wing at the east end seems to have originally been built as a separate two-storeyed house before being connected to the hall range. The interior showcases exposed ceiling beams and joists, along with two large open hearths. There are several original windows, some of which have been restored and feature ovolo moulded mullions. The later timber-framed and plastered wing at the west end is likely from the 18th century. The roofs are tiled, and the chimney stacks have been rebuilt. The north end of the east wing has a gambrel roof.
