Description
The Church of St Mary is a Grade I listed building located in Preston St Mary. This church features elements from the 14th and 15th centuries, constructed with flint and stone dressings. It has perpendicular aisles and a clerestorey, along with a west tower that was rebuilt in 1868 after being struck by lightning in 1758. The chancel dates back to the 14th century, while the nave is from the 15th century. The north porch showcases impressive flushwork panelling. The nave, aisles, and west tower are castellated. Inside, notable features include a finely carved 12th-century square font, the lower part of a former 14th-century rood screen, and a low tomb recess in the north aisle. There is a 17th-century monument to Robert Ryece of Preston Hall, who died in 1638. Many of the windows display heraldic shields, believed to have been made for Robert Ryece, along with well-crafted poppyhead bench ends. The church is recognized for its architectural and historical significance.
