Description

Crown Farmhouse is a 16th-century farmhouse constructed of brick, which is partially colour-washed, and timber-frame, featuring plain-tiled roofs. The building has a T-shaped plan, stands two storeys tall with an attic, and consists of three bays. The gable ends are returned in brick, and the ground floor has a jettied timber-framed upper floor. The central front door, dating from the 19th century, is flanked by a three-light mullioned and transomed window on either side. Above, there are three casement windows with horizontal glazing bars.

The south gable end features elaborate moulded brick corbelling that supports the jettied return, while a similar feature on the north side has been rebuilt in a stepped form. The steep-pitched roof has gable-end stacks, with four octagonal chimneys on the south side. Moulded brick kneelers form the bases for former finials.

At the rear, part of the timber framing is exposed, revealing a three-light chamfered mullion window and a wavy tension brace. There is also a moulded-brick rectangular hood-mould above a blocked door. A small rear extension has a jettied first floor and gable. Original side jetties are obscured by later lean-tos. The Bressumers are carved with a lozenge pattern, and the arched brackets of the gable jetty are supported by carved responds with gothic capitals on angle studs. Additionally, there is a single bay of 19th-century casements with horizontal glazing bars.
