Description
The Church of St Catherine is a Grade I listed building located in Morning Thorpe, Fritton. It features a 12th-century round west tower with a 15th-century octagonal belfry stage and a later embattled parapet. The tower has an unmoulded arch with plain imposts and a plain 12th-century north doorway leading to the nave. The nave contains 19th-century Perpendicular windows, while the chancel has two-light lancet windows and Y-tracery windows. There is a 15th-century south porch. Inside, the church has 19th-century roofs and 15th-century wall paintings depicting St Christopher, St George, and a small figure of a bishop. The church also features a 15th-century octagonal font with four lions on the stem and four lions and angels on the bowl. Additionally, there is a circa 1520 dado of a screen with eight painted panels, two of which depict John Bacon, the donor, and his family, with the screen rebuilt above the dado. The building is constructed of flint rubble with brick and stone dressings, topped with a slate roof.
