Description

The Church of St Margaret is a Grade I listed building located on the north-west side of The Street in Shelton. The church features a round west tower that collapsed in 1770, leaving only the east side of the tower remaining above the nave roof level. The nave and chancel are combined, with a plain Norman doorway on the north side and an altered Norman doorway on the south. The south side has two-light Perpendicular windows, while the north side features two-light Decorated windows and a window with Y-tracery. The east window is a three-light Perpendicular design.

There is a 15th-century south porch constructed of chequered brick and knapped flint, which includes a moulded brick arch and brick two-light Perpendicular windows on the sides. Inside, the church boasts a 15th-century arch-braced roof with a crenellated wall plate and longitudinal arched braces beneath. There are also rood stairs and a 15th-century screen featuring traceried pointed arches and a traceried dado with painted panels. A wall painting of St Christopher, dating from around 1390, can be found on the north wall.

The church contains a 17th-century manorial pew with high panelled sides and a tester on square moulded posts, as well as an early 17th-century communion rail with flat balusters. The font is octagonal and dates from the 15th century, featuring quatrefoils in the panels of the bowl and a panelled stem. Fragments of stained glass are present in the chancel windows. Notable monuments include two tomb-chests: one for Thomas Glean from 1666 and another for Sir Peter Gleane from 1685.
