Description
The White Hall is a farmhouse located in Ashwellthorpe, dating from the 17th century, with an early 19th-century front range added. The building has an 'L' shaped plan and features pantile roofs with glazed tiles. The original 17th-century structure is constructed from rendered timber frame with close studding and wattle and daub infill panels. There are also 19th and 20th-century extensions and replacement windows.
The farmhouse is two storeys tall with an attic, consisting of seven bays and a stack bay. Inside, there are transverse bridging beams, ovolo moulded principal joists, and evidence of diamond mullions and an oriel window. The upper level has lightly cambered tie beams with raised spinal bridging joists and arched braces at the corners. A lobby entrance leads to a winding staircase that ascends to the attic.
The early 19th-century front range is made of rendered clay lump on a brick plinth and has a symmetrical three-bay facade. The central part-glazed panelled front door is flanked by vertical sliding sashes with 20 lights and glazing bars. Smaller sashes are present at the first floor, with a smaller sash in the central bay. The interior features a central hall with flanking single rooms and a central staircase with mahogany rails.
