Description
The gazebo, built around 1560 for Sir Thomas Gresham, is located approximately 60 meters east of Intwood Hall. It was restored and possibly repositioned in 1852 for Joseph Salusbury Muskett. Constructed of brick, the gazebo features a raking pantile roof and is square in shape, facing west. It has polygonal clasping buttresses and large octagonal stone finials added in 1852. The stepped parapet was also rebuilt in 1852. A 4-centred arch made of brick includes stone shields in the spandrels, displaying the grasshopper badge of Thomas Gresham on the left and the Gresham arms on the right. The return walls are made of 15th-century brick in English bond, with the upper part in 19th-century Flemish bond brick. Inside, there is a stone corbel on the rear wall depicting a fat man holding a shield, and the floor is made of small flint cobbles, marked with the datestone JSM/1852. The gazebo is depicted in a painting from around 1640, which is kept in the current Intwood Hall. Intwood Hall itself is not listed.
