Description
29 and 31 Damgate Street are two houses that have been combined into one. They date back to around 1530 but were significantly altered in the early 17th century, effectively making it a rebuilding. The exterior features a plastered and colourwashed timber frame with a pantile roof. The building stands two storeys high with an attic and has two central 18th-century panelled doors, although the door to the north has been blocked. There are sash windows on either side of the doors, both with glazing bars and shutters. The first floor is deeply jettied and is lit by three sash windows with glazing bars. The gabled roof has a central ridge stack that was rebuilt in 1987. To the right, there is a two-storey carriageway extension that is also timber framed and has a gabled roof, with a square carriage entrance. At the rear, there is a brick outshut dating from around 1820.
Inside, both ground-floor rooms are heated and feature fireplaces with plain bressumers. The north room has plain bridging beams and joists, while the south room has a sunk quadrant bridging beam and wall plate. The first-floor south wall includes a six-light diamond-mullioned timber window with three king mullions and a transom, above which is a wall plate with sunk quadrant mouldings. The rear wall once had a five-light diamond-mullioned window, but it is now without mullions. The building also features jowled principal studs with straight braces, and the roof is constructed with diminished principals, clasped purlins, and collars.
