Description
Pond Cottage is a house from the 17th century and later, located in Toft Monks. It is constructed of red brick, partly colourwashed, with the east gable rendered. The building features a steeply pitched pantile roof and has 12 storeys arranged in a lobby entrance plan. The south facade is symmetrical and three bays wide, with 20th-century two-light casements that include glazing bars. There is a central lean-to porch, also from the 20th century, and the ground floor openings have segmental heads. Attic casements are present in the gables, along with three 20th-century gabled dormers. The parapet gables have brick coping, and the western gable is made of red brick with tumbling-in. A ridge stack opposite the entrance has three linked lozenge-shaped shafts. There is a 20th-century extension on the north side.
Inside, there is a winding stair against the stack in the lobby. The tie beams feature plain and stepped run-out chamfer stops. The ground floor east room contains a notable 18th-century corner cupboard with a shell niche and a plaster cornice adorned with paterae. Above the fireplace bressummer, there is a faint painted text in black letter script with a looped border, which is not clearly decipherable but is likely from around 1663.
