Description
Tacolneston Hall is an early 18th-century house that has a 16th-century core. The south front is made of red brick with blue brick dressings and features a tile hipped roof. The building has a layout of 2:7:2 bays, with flanking two-bay wings that project, and a central three-bay section topped with a pediment. It has a modillion eaves cornice and sash windows with thick glazing bars, flat rubbed brick arches, and a central first-floor window framed by a moulded brick architrave. Below this, there is a modern doorway with a segmental pedimental hood supported by very large carved brackets, leading to a fielded panel door. The right-hand wing includes a large modern ground-floor bay window. The rear of the house retains elements from the 16th century, with some exposed timber-framing on the east side, although it has been restored in the late 19th century. The property features two groups of brick octagonal chimney stacks with moulded bases and star caps.
Inside, the hall showcases exposed timber-framing, 17th-century panelling, and chamfered ceiling beams and joists. There is an 18th-century open well staircase with turned balusters and a moulded handrail. Two first-floor rooms feature fielded panelling; one has moulded ceiling beams, while the other has a moulded cornice.
