Clay Cottage is a 17th-century house located on the west side of Hingham Market Place. It features a timber frame construction with a steep pantile roof and gable ends. The west end of the house has been rendered, while the east end displays exposed close-set studding. The building has two storeys and an attic, with an attic window situated in the gable end. The windows are asymmetrically arranged, including two three-light casements and two 20th-century casements, along with a 20th-century 'Tudor' style oak door. The west end, which faces the church, also contains 20th-century casements. The east end, facing the Market Place, features sash windows with glazing bars, comprising two on the ground floor and one on the first floor. A central axial brick chimney stack is present.
