Description
Topcroft Hall is a house that dates back to the early 16th century, with extensions and alterations made around 1900 and 1960. It features a timber frame construction with brick elements and a tiled roof. The building has an irregular plan that incorporates an L-shaped design from the 16th century, which was extended and partly brick-clad around 1900, and further extended and altered in 1960.
The facade presents two storeys and an attic, with a regular neo-Georgian centre consisting of five bays added in the 1960s. To the left, there are two bays from the 1900 extension that include moulded brick mullioned windows. There is also a further two-storey addition from the 20th century on the left side.
Inside, there is a large five-light window with chamfered mullions that has been moved to an interior wall and is currently unglazed. The timber frame exhibits very heavy scantling. One ground floor room features a heavily chamfered transverse beam with roll moulding on the joist supports. An upper room consists of three bays with hollow moulding on the arched braces that create four 4-centred arches, and intermediate beams with hollow-nick-roll hollow moulding; this room has been partitioned and partly ceilings the stairwell. There is also a first-floor room with a cambered tie beam supported by kneelers, forming a 4-centred arch, which is now partitioned.
