Description

The Sheriff House Restaurant, formerly known as Shingle House, is a late 16th and early 17th century house situated on Brockdish Common Lane. It is a timber-frame building with roughcast rendering. The roof has a steep pitch and gabled ends. The north end of the house has a jettied gable. A brick chimney stack is positioned off-centre, featuring four octagonal shafts with moulded brick bases and a roundel bearing the date 1708. The building has two storeys and an attic, with an attic window visible in the end gable. There are five windows spaced widely apart; the ground floor on the left features three-light mullion/transom casements with pediments. The entrance is marked by an 18th-century doorcase with a shouldered architrave, a pulvinated frieze, and a pediment, leading to a 19th-century glazed door. A long 17th-century wing extends along The Street, creating an L-shaped plan. This wing also has a roughcast timber-frame and a steep tiled roof with gabled ends. It features a central brick chimney stack, and contains windows dating from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries; some are casements with glazing bars, while others have leaded panes.
