Description

Mill House is a house with a 17th-century core and 18th and 19th-century additions. The left-hand portion is constructed of flint and brick rubble, with brickwork above, while the right-hand portion is of red brick with a rendered plinth. The roof is hipped and covered with pantiles, and there are two brick chimneys. The house is two storeys and has an attic, with five first-floor windows. A six-panelled door (with two panes of glass) is located centrally on the right-hand portion, featuring plain reveals and flanked by plain pilasters under a pediment. A tripartite sash window with glazing bars to the left shows traces of an earlier window-head. Other windows have flat, gauged brick arches with keyblocks on the ground floor, and flush-fronted frames with timber lintels on the first floor. A box cornice runs along the top of the building. The left wing has a ground-floor casement window and tripartite sashes on the first floor, with traces of brick jambs suggesting earlier, wider windows. A stone inscribed "DB" (with no date visible) is located beside a straight joint. A door leads into a lean-to passage on the left. A two-storey extension to the right features one first-floor window and a canted ground-floor bay to the left of a half-glazed door within a simple doorcase with a small hood. The straight joint at the rear does not align with the front elevation. Brick quoins within a side wall indicate a probable rear extension of the 17th-century range. The main part of the house bears a brick inscription reading “A-B 1795” beside the back door.
