Description
The School House, built in 1858 by architect Suter for the Fishmongers, is a Grade II listed building located in Holt Market Place. It is constructed of red brick and features a steep plain-tiled roof. The building has two storeys and an attic, with a central block flanked by two cross-wings to the north and south.
The windows are timber casements with mullions, transoms, and glazing bars, and there are cambered brick arches above the wind openings. A continuous brick drip mould runs over the first-floor window openings. Notable features include a two-storey bay window on the west wall of the north wing, which has a hipped roof, and a projecting two-storey porch on the south side that contains a two-centred arched doorway with a stone surround. Above the doorway is a panel displaying a coat of arms and the date 1562. The wings have parapetted gables, and there are three 'wedge' dormers on the west side of the main block. The building also has brick chimney stacks, one of which is diagonally set on the south side.
The School House is built on the site of Sir Thomas Gresham's former manor house and is included for its value to the townscape.
