Description

This is an 18th-century row of painted brick buildings, numbered 1 to 6, known as The Gangway. It has a steep pantile roof with coped gable ends and brick dentil eaves. The buildings are three storeys high and feature six windows, with the exception of number 1, which has one. The ground and first floors have sash windows with glazing bars. The second floor has smaller two-light casements with glazing bars. The ground floor entrances consist of flush-panelled doors set within segmental arch-headed openings. Numbers 5 and 6 have modern glazed doors. Number 1, located at the southern end, is also three storeys and has all sash windows with glazing bars, a blind round-headed window in the gable, and a central flush-panelled door with a wooden lattice porch. Traces of five segmental-headed window openings are visible on the first and second floors of numbers 2 to 6. The building is part of a group that includes Nos 18, 20 and 22 Cromer Baptist Church, Nos 26 and 28 Church Street, and Nos 1 to 7 (consec) The Gangway, incorporating No 1 Surrey Street.
