Description

The Old School, dated 1816, is a former school that now serves as a village hall. It is constructed of pebble flint with brick dressings and features a hipped roof covered with corrugated tiles at the front and black glazed pantiles on the sides and rear. The building has three bays with outshuts at the rear.

The south front has a chamfered brick cap on the flint plinth, a dentil cornice, and an axial stack to the right. There are three windows with rusticated brick jambs; the central window has six lights and is topped with a brick pediment that includes the inscription '1816 National School.' To the left is a three-light casement window with a moulded brick pediment filled with pebble flint, while a later four-light window to the right is set under a soldier arch. A large five-light dormer window is located under the hipped roof of the central bay.

Early 20th-century large four-light windows with transoms are found on the left and right returns. The entrance is located in the outshut on the left return, featuring a four-centred brick arch that contains a fanlight with three vertical glazing bars above the door. Inside, there are two rooms with one and two bays, a boarded roof, and wainscot. The plan of the school has remained unaltered since before 1867, and the left window and central pediment match a sketch design from 1816 found in the County Record office.
