Description

The Great Walsingham War Memorial is a First World War memorial cross located in the north-east corner of the churchyard of the Church of All Saints and St Peter, which is a Grade I listed building. The memorial is prominently placed just inside the churchyard entrance. It features an elaborate wheel-head cross that rises from a moulded collar atop a slender, octagonal shaft. This cross shaft is mounted on a square pedestal with moulded upper corners, which itself stands on a two-stage base. The base has freestone corners and cornice, with knapped flint panels on the sides of the upper stage. A step is incorporated into the upper stage of the base on the south side.

The pedestal displays inscriptions carved in relief. The main dedicatory inscription on the south face reads: "IN PROUD AND/ GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE OF/ THE MEN/ OF GREAT WALSINGHAM/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ FOR KING AND COUNTRY/ IN THE WAR/ 1914 – 1919." The names of those commemorated are listed on the east and west faces, while the north face features the inscription: "GREATER LOVE HATH/ NO MAN THAN THIS THAT/ A MAN LAY DOWN HIS/ LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS."
