Description
54 Lower Gresham is a house dating from the early 17th century, with later alterations and additions. It is constructed of flint and brick, topped with a Belgian tile roof and has a three-cell plan. The building has two storeys and features scattered casement windows. The left bay was either added or refaced in the 18th century, using a combination of flint and brick headers. The ground floor has a casement window set under a rubbed brick flat arch, with brick quoins that are toothed on the left. The rest of the wall is primarily made of flint.
The entrance features a three-plank and muntin door with a small light in the center plank, framed by timber jambs with ogival moulding, chamfered brick reveals, and a brick hood mould. On either side of the door are small lights with chamfered reveals and hood moulds. To the right of the door is a 20th-century casement, followed by another casement in a larger, part-blocked opening. At the extreme right is a blocked two-light window with a visible brick mullion and a hood mould. The first floor has four casement windows, with evidence of earlier openings. A brick eaves cornice runs along the top, and there are parapet gables and a gable end stack.
A single-storey extension from the 19th or 20th century is located to the right. At the rear, there is a 17th-century doorway and a small light beside it, both with chamfered reveals and hood moulds. There is also a 19th-century casement in a larger part-blocked opening, featuring chamfered reveals and a hood mould. Inside, the northern ground floor room has an ovolo-moulded beam, and there is a staircase beside the stack. A second staircase features a finial on the newel, and the pantry and staircase have moulded door surrounds with elaborately carved stops.
