Description

Sustead Old Hall is a house that was previously dated to 1663 based on tie irons. The front of the house collapsed and was rebuilt in 1888. The lower two-storey range to the right is from the 18th century. The building is constructed of flint and brick with a pantile roof and has an irregular plan. The facade features three bays, two storeys, and an attic, which was re-faced in the 19th century. It has 20th-century timber mullioned and transomed windows and a central 20th-century door. The ground floor has 17th-century brick corner pilasters, and there is a 19th-century platband. The first floor has three windows, with the first and third bays featuring 19th-century stepped gables that were previously shaped gables. A pedimented dormer is located over the central bay.

On the right-hand return wall, there is a three-light window with moulded brick mullions and hood moulds on both the ground and first floors. The left-hand return wall has a similar window on both floors. The contemporary parallel rear range has sash windows with glazing bars; there are four sashes on the ground floor in earlier openings with hood moulds. A central low glazed door is flanked by a sash window with a hood above, between the floors. On the first floor to the left, there is a pair of brick mullioned and transomed windows under one hood mould, with a single light to the left and two sash windows to the right. There are also two pedimented attic lights and gable end stacks with central pilasters.

Inside, there are two rooms with 18th-century pine panelling and an early 17th-century staircase that was likely introduced to the house. Sustead Old Hall was once the home of Humphry Repton.
