Description

The Church of the Assumption is a parish church featuring flint walls with stone dressings and a red pantiled roof. It dates back to the 11th or 12th century for the nave, with a 20th-century south porch and an early 14th-century chancel. The nave has splayed round windows from the 11th or 12th century on the north wall, and above the chancel arch, there is a triangular-headed door. The existing chancel may be an extension of an 11th or 12th-century sanctuary tower. Notable features include a Norman north door and a south window in the nave, along with a Norman south door framed by a 13th-century early English arched surround with shafts, shaft-rings, leaf capitals, keel roll, and zigzag mouldings. The nave consists of two bays, with one curvilinear window on the north and south sides and a "Y" tracery window on the west. The chancel has a "Y" tracery window on the south side and a three-light intersected tracery window on the east side. The interior was restored around 1938, which included a new chancel arch and chancel roof, while the nave features a 19th-century tie beam roof. There is an 18th-century font on a stem, and the nave and chancel benches were created in 1954 by Margaret Tarrent. The east window was made by Ward and Hughes in 1893.
