Description
The Gatehouse to the Manor is a detached gatehouse that dates from after 1527, based on heraldic evidence. It is constructed of brick rubble and features moulded brick elements. The building has two storeys and is adorned with four corner angle shafts that rise above a battlemented parapet, culminating in circular finials. On the south side, there is a perpendicular arch with stone jambs and a moulded brick arch, featuring a spandrel that displays the Tudor Royal coat of arms from after 1527. The first floor has a three-light mullioned window set in a panelled field that extends over the angle shafts on this side only. The original vaulting inside the arch is no longer present. On the north side, there is an arch facing the house, set within a fleuron-framed compartment. To the west, there is a five-sided staircase turret. It is believed that the gatehouse was originally flanked by now-demolished ancillary wings associated with East Barsham Manor. The structure is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument, County Number 138.
