Description
Barclay's Bank is a house built in 1768, which became the offices of the Lynn Bank in 1869 and later merged with other banks in 1896 to form Barclay's Bank. The entire facade and the south return were rebuilt in 1957, and the interior was extensively remodeled around 1984. The building is constructed of brick with a slate roof at the rear. It features a three-storey facade with nine bays, where the central three bays project forward under a pediment. There are three re-used engaged columns flanking the central door and windows, with sash windows throughout.
Inside, the building retains three chimneypieces. The top floor south-east room and the room directly below it date from the late 18th century and display delicate Adamesque swags and urn motifs. The first-floor central hall features a chimneypiece in the Kentian style, with bulbous scrolled jambs supporting a gadrooned cornice above a frieze adorned with high relief carvings of two birds and abundant vegetation.
