Description
The length of the town wall in King's Lynn is likely linked to murage grants from 1266. It is constructed from limestone, brick, and carstone. The west side features a series of brick stilted arches, which were restored in the 20th century, leading into small chambers. Behind these brick arches are original openings with chamfered carstone 4-centred arches, although the northern arch is completely blocked. The east side has five ashlar-faced buttresses with set-offs, along with the remains of an additional buttress at the north end. A 4-centred arch at this location leads into the previously mentioned blocked chamber. There is one brick doorway situated between the fourth and fifth buttresses from the south, and blocked arrow slits can be found at intervals along the wall. This structure is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument, known as King's Lynn No. 174A.
