Description
This is a terrace of eleven houses located on Guanock Place, built in 1825. Numbers 7 and 8 were combined in the late 19th century with a shopfront extension, and numbers 10 and 11 are now a hotel. The facades are of brown brick, with red brick returns and rear elevations. The roofs are slate to the front and mostly pantiles to the rear. Each of the three-storey houses has two bays, with the main door situated to the left. Blind window bays are positioned above the doors, with number 4 being an exception, possessing two sash windows on each floor. The original front doors are panelled, each topped with a four-vaned fanlight within a doorcase featuring engaged columns with fluting above a plain base. Windows are sash windows with glazing bars, each set beneath a gauged skewback arch. A platband at first floor level features stucco decoration depicting palmette and tulip motifs over a running scroll; some portions of this decoration have been filled in. Numbers 7 and 8 have been amalgamated and include a late 20th-century shopfront. A basket carriage arch, leading to Robert Street, is situated between numbers 8 and 9; below the arch are two original doors and fanlights, one on each side. Numbers 10 and 11, now the Guannock Hotel, have a rendered and colourwashed ground floor and rusticated quoins, with the platband retaining only the running scroll motif. Gabled roofs include stacks at the division between properties. Number 4 has a bay window added to the ground floor. The doors have been altered at numbers 1, 2, 3, 7-8, 9, 10 and 11. Fenestration has been altered at numbers 3 and 6, with some original sashes having been replaced with horn-type sashes. Stacks have been rebuilt at numbers 1 & 2, 3 & 4, and 4 & 5. The rear elevations have been largely altered.
