Description
The lych gates, gate piers, and abutments located 25 metres northeast of the Church of St. Mary in Sedgeford were built in 1852. They feature coursed, squared carstone with stone dressings, and include wooden and cast iron gates. The design is in the High Victorian Gothic style, characterized by two piers that have a single set-off and gabled coping. On the north side of the northern pier, there is an inscription set within a stone arch that reads: "These gates were erected/By the Reverend the Vicar W.B. Estcourt/And his parishioners/To remind the living/And in memory of the dead/During V months AD MDCCCLII/Out of/CL sick/XX Persons died of typhus fever/'He doth not afflict willingly/Nor grieve the children of men' Lam(entations) III, 33 (xxxiii)." The gates themselves are made of two leaves with X frame stretchers and metal dog rails topped with spear heads. These gates are included for their historical interest.
