Description
Dersingham War Memorial is located at the north-east corner of Dersingham Recreation Ground, at the junction of Station Road and Hunstanton Road. It is prominently positioned facing the road and is surrounded by a square of railings. The monument features a stone obelisk raised on a tall, rusticated pier that is square in shape. Each of the two front-facing corners of the pier has a stone wing that projects outward, and the base of the pier is stepped. The wings each support a sculpted recumbent lion.
The four sides of the pier display inscriptions on recent polished granite panels. The front upper panel reads "FOR GOD AND HUMANITY" and "FOR KING AND COUNTRY," flanking a wreath that encircles a coat of arms carved in low relief, with "R.I.P" and 48 names below. The front lower panel lists "1939 - 1945" along with 19 names. The right panel is inscribed with "ROLL OF HONOUR OVERSEA SERVICE" followed by 78 names and "HOME SERVICE" with 44 names. The left panel states "ROLL OF HONOUR OVERSEA SERVICE" with 128 names. The rear panel declares, "THIS MONUMENT IS ERECTED BY THE PEOPLE OF DERSINGHAM IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THOSE WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES AND ALL WHO SERVED THEIR COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1919."
