Description
The Old Custom House is a pair of houses dating from around 1825, which were converted into a single house in the mid-20th century and altered internally in 1985. The building is constructed of red brick and has a pantiled roof, standing two storeys tall with a two-window range. The central entrance features a pair of 20th-century glazed doors framed by late 19th-century timber doorcases. On either side of the doors are horned sash windows with a 2/2 configuration, set under gauged skewback arches. The first floor has two similar sash windows without the gauged arches. Between the first-floor windows is a recessed oval panel inscribed with the words "Old Custom House." The roof is gabled, with internal gable-end stacks on both sides. A side passage to the north has been given a sloping roof in the 20th century, along with a new door added in 1985. The rear elevation features a single-storeyed extension from the late 20th century, with a mix of sash and 20th-century casement windows, as well as an arched early 19th-century window with narrow leaded panes. The interior has no notable features, as various dividing walls were removed during the 1985 alterations. The building is included for its group value.
