Description

This is a presbytery, built in 1848-50, designed by the architect JJ Scoles and originally intended to serve alongside the nearby Church of St Mary. The structure is constructed from knapped Quaternary and Quarry flint with Lincolnshire Limestone dressings, covered by slate roofs. It is rectangular in plan and three storeys high.

The exterior features a slightly asymmetrical facade with a projecting bay to the right and a ground floor bay window with a parapet to the left. Later additions include two projecting gablets on the second floor to the north. Windows are casements with stone surrounds, moulded mullions, and are arranged as two or three lights, with cusped ogee heads. A projecting stair turret and a dormer window are present on the rear elevation. A single-storey link constructed from knapped flint connects the presbytery to the Church of St Mary to the east.

The interior is relatively plain, with a simple staircase and few historic fixtures and fittings remaining. The presbytery's history is linked to the establishment of a Catholic mission in Great Yarmouth in 1824, by the Jesuits, who purchased land and commissioned Scoles to design both the church and the presbytery. The building cost £10,000 to construct.

Later alterations include the addition of a third storey with gablets in the late 19th or early 20th century, as well as extensions to the rear. The ground floor interior has been remodelled and many of the original fixtures and fittings have been removed. The presbytery is designated at Grade II for its aesthetic merit, good craftsmanship, quality materials, and its considerable group value with the contemporary Church of St Mary, also designed by Scoles.
