Description

Malthouse Farmhouse is a 17th-century farmhouse with later additions, situated on Oulton Street in Oulton. The farmhouse is constructed of red brick in English bond, set upon a flint plinth, and has a steeply-pitched thatched roof. It is L-shaped and two storeys high with attics.

The east elevation has four bays, featuring 3-light casement windows with transoms, the ground floor openings having segmental heads. An off-centre, two-storey gabled porch features an elliptical entrance arch with a cross-casement window above. The gable parapet has a tumbled-in detail. The south gable is crow-stepped with an internal chimney stack, featuring twin square chimney shafts that have been rebuilt. Smaller 2-light mullioned windows are present in the attic and on the first floor; one first-floor window has been replaced with a 20th-century casement. An axial stack, off-centre to the north, has twin square shafts and a linked top. The north gable is parapeted with tumbling-in, and includes a ground-floor canted bay with a hipped plaintiled roof and a painted-on false attic casement.

A later west range has an internal stack on a parapeted gable. Pantiled lean-to additions are located at the west gable and in the north-west angle.
