Description
The Mausoleum is a Grade II* listed structure built in 1793, designed by architect Joseph Bonomi. It features a pyramid shape made of limestone ashlar blocks set on a square base, surrounded by later iron perimeter railings. The east side has a central doorway with a two-leaf panelled door, framed by a stone architrave and entablature, which is topped with a heraldic achievement. The entablature displays the motto "AVCTOR PRETIOSA FACET." The north and south sides each have a central square opening with moulded stone architraves. On the west side, there is a square memorial panel with an architrave and entablature, topped by a bull. This tablet commemorates John Hobart, Earl of Buckingham, who died in 1793, and notes that the mausoleum was erected by his widow and William Asheton Harbord. Inside, the mausoleum features a domed vault with a dentilled cornice and eight arched recesses, five of which are blind and house tombs and wall monuments.
