Description
The water tower, built in 1897, was designed by Sir Ernest George and Alfred Yeates for George Cawston. It is constructed of red brick and features a plain tile roof, with a decagonal shape. The tower stands four storeys tall. The ground floor is accessed through a round-headed plank door on the south-west side and is illuminated by a single slit window with a gauged skewback arch on the north-east side. The first floor shows an offset that indicates a decrease in wall thickness, and both the first and second floors are lit by similar slit windows on alternating sides that rise to the top stage. The second floor displays tie irons shaped like the numerals "1897." The top stage is corbelled out and has tile-hanging below a continuous frieze of timber mullioned windows, with three windows on each side. It is topped with a conical roof and a spike finial. On the south-east side, there is a tile-hung staircase spur supported by straight braces, providing access to an internal glazed walkway. Inside, the ground floor contains an internal well, and the first and second floors are accessible by timber ladders through trapdoors. The top stage holds a steel water tank supported by six steel joists.
