Description
The turnstile and railings located approximately 75 meters northwest of the Church of St Mary in Whissonsett date from the mid-19th century and are made of wrought iron. The turnstile is cross-shaped and operates on a central pivot, with each arm featuring a bottom and top rail supported by four upright iron rods. On either side of the turnstile are two sections of curved railing, which also have upright bars between the top and bottom rails. Additional railings with spear-shaped tops extend across the remaining width of the path, connecting the curved sections.
Historically, this turnstile is one of four sets located along paths that provide access to the church from the surrounding streets. Ordnance Survey maps from 1886 and 1906 show barriers at this location and the other three listed turnstiles, suggesting they were likely installed around the same time and share a similar design.
This turnstile and railings are designated at Grade II due to their special interest as a complete and intact example of a mid-19th century turnstile, as well as their group value with the other three turnstiles and the Church of St Mary, which is listed at Grade II*.
