Description

21 Commercial Road is a building dating from around 1840, which was refronted by George Skipper in 1890. It is constructed of plastered and colourwashed clay lump, red brick, and Cosseyware, with a roof made of pantiles.

The west front, designed in 1890, features two storeys and a three-window range. The central entrance has a half-glazed door set within an arched fluted doorcase, topped by a stained glass overlight. A sheet steel tented door canopy with wrought-iron scrollwork is supported by two spiral cast-iron columns. Above the entrance, there is a 2/2 unhorned sash window with a scalloped gauged skewback arch. Flanking the entrance are full-height canted bay windows on both sides, which have 1/1, 2/2, and 1/1 unhorned sashes on the ground floor under gauged skewback arches, and 1/1 unhorned sashes at the first floor, also with stained-glass overlights. A dogtooth band of Cosseyware is present at the first floor, and the bays are topped with tented roofs. The building features moulded kneelers made of Cosseyware and internal gable-end stacks of decorated and moulded Cosseyware with crenellated caps, with twin flues on the south side and triple flues on the north side.

The rear elevation includes a 20th-century verandah on the left and a 20th-century greenhouse on the right. There is a 6/3 unhorned sash window on the first floor, along with two 2-light casements and one single arched light. The eaves cornice is double dentilled.

On the south return, there is a three-panelled door with glazing beneath a three-vaned fanlight, set within a timber doorcase with a cornice.

Inside, the staircase features turned balusters.
