Description
The garden walls to Breckles Hall are a complex of interconnecting walls that include two gardens, a courtyard, and a boundary wall. Constructed of brick with coping tiles, these walls date from the late 16th century to the early 17th century.
The main entrance features a segmental semi-circular rebated arch, which is flanked by pilasters on a plinth. Below the arch, there is a string course and a moulded brick cornice, leading to a serpentine overthrow that is punched with oval lunettes. The battlemented walls, which rest on a plinth, extend both north and south, returning to the house. The battlements and merlons are topped with terra-cotta saddleback coping tiles that sit on a saw-toothed cornice.
There are four subsidiary gateways that connect the gardens. The gateway to the courtyard from the south has a segmental arch flanked by clasping buttresses and battlements that match the walls. The gateway to the courtyard from the north features a 4-centred arch with pilasters leading to a parapet and battlements that align with the walls.
