Description

The Church of All Saints is a parish church located in Croxton, dating from the 12th to the 15th century, with restoration carried out in 1856. The building is constructed of flint with ashlar dressings and brick, featuring a pantiled roof over the nave and aisle, and a slate roof over the chancel. The church has a 12th-century round tower at the west end, topped by an octagonal belfry stage that includes four 2-light windows from around 1300. The 19th-century broach spire is a notable feature. Most of the exterior detailing, with the exception of the south clerestory and the chancel east window, is from the 19th century. The south porch and aisle are also part of the structure. The south clerestory is made of brick and consists of two 2-light windows per bay, likely from the late 15th century. The chancel east window is a three-light double ogee type dating to around 1340, and there is one flushwork panelled corner buttress. The north side of the church has a 19th-century vestry and three 19th-century windows, with no clerestory present. Inside, the nave has three bays supported by octagonal piers with double chamfered arches on the south side, and a similar chancel arch. The interior features a remarkable late 15th-century hammerbeam roof with a crenellated wall plate and hammerbeams, panelled spandrels, arched braces to the ridge purlin with pendants at the intersections, and single moulded butt purlins. An early 15th-century font, likely representing the seven sacraments, is present but has lost its carvings.
