Description
The Church of Saint Mary is a Grade I listed building located on Church Street. The east end of the chancel dates back to the 13th century, while the west end was constructed in the 14th century. The nave, aisles, north and south chapels, west tower, and two-storey south porch with a 15th-century turret were all built in the 14th century. The church features 15th-century windows and a clerestorey in the nave. A north porch was added in 1836, and a 19th-century spire was also installed. Inside, there is a 13th-century double piscina in the chancel, a 14th-century piscina and double sedilia in the south chapel, and 15th-century brasses in the north chapel along with a restored screen to the chapels and chancel. The church also has an octagonal 13th-century font. Notable memorials include fine 18th and 19th-century marble wall tablets, including the Caldecott memorial with carved figures, created in 1846 by E. H. Baily. A window in the north aisle was made in 1881 by C. E. Kempe. The church and its surrounding structures form a significant group.
