Description
This large barn, located to the northeast of the coach house at Old Westmill Farm, dates from the mid-17th century. It features a timber frame set on a brick sill, with dark weatherboarding and a steeply pitched corrugated iron roof. The barn consists of five bays and is single-aisled, facing north. It has central double doors on the north side that are recessed to align with the depth of the aisle. The structure includes jowled bay-posts and arcade-posts, with long curved braces connecting to the tie-beams and arcade plate. The roof is designed with clasped purlins, featuring two purlins on each slope. The upper purlin is supported by high collars, while the lower purlin rests on convex curved queen-posts inside the barn and on a lower collar at the gable ends. Similar convex curved queen-posts also support the aisle-purlin, which is carried on aisle-ties. The walls are reinforced with straight tension braces.
