Description

Spindle Cottage is a house, dating to 1717, with a 20th-century extension on the south side. The house is constructed of red brick laid in a Flemish bond, and is now painted. It has a steep roof of old red tiles. The original house is a one-and-a-half-story, three-cell structure facing east, with a matching single-cell extension to the south.

The east front has a plinth and four windows with segmental arches. Four gabled dormers are set into the eaves. Dormers have two-light casement windows with leaded glazing. Similar windows appear on the south side, with two three-light windows to the left of the plank front door. A canted oriel replaces a window on the right-hand side. The house has an internal chimney near the middle, serving the kitchen, and an external chimney on the north gable, serving the parlour.

Originally, the house had a three-cell plan, with the entrance into a large lobby containing a staircase rising to the left, and a service room partitioned off to the rear. A partition exists below an axial beam. The south cell served as a kitchen, considerably narrowed by a large internal chimney, featuring a fireplace with a plain, high lintel. The parlour is located on the east side, with longitudinal beams in the ceiling and a moulded fire surround. The interior features plain beams and squared joists, with run-out chamfers on the timbers. Re-used timbers are visible in the roof, some with smoke-blackening. There is no indication the house was ever a single story.
