Description
The double ice house, located in the corner of a field 15 meters to the northwest of St. Ibbs Lodge, dates from after 1816 and was used to store ice for St. Ibbs. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond within the passages. The structure features two underground chambers designed for storing ice, likely sourced from the lake to the east. Each chamber has a diameter of about 5 meters and is conically shaped, lined with brick, and covered by a brick dome. Access to the chambers is provided at the springing level of the dome through a segmental arched vaulted passage that is approximately 1 meter wide and 3 meters long. Each passage has checks for two or more doors, with the outer doors located where the passages meet at right angles. One passage extends further north as an entrance, although this section has now collapsed, while the other passage branches off to the west. The chambers are partly filled with rubbish and earth.
