Description
The South Barn at Lower Farm, located 15 metres south of the house, is a barn dating from the later 17th century. It features a four-bay timber frame construction and is positioned beside a lane facing west. The barn has a steep red painted corrugated roof and a red brick plinth. There is a porch projection on the west side in the second bay from the north, and the northern bay has been extended as an aisle beside the porch in the 18th century. The east side has double doors. The roof is constructed with clasped purlins and angled queen struts, although it lacks collars. The queen struts widen at the junction with the principal. The barn has swept jowled posts with arched braces to the tie beam, many of which have been replaced by regular quadrant braces in the 18th century. There is also a lean-to structure at the southwest under the continuation of the roof. This barn is part of a group of buildings around Lower Farm.
