Description

Vine Cottage (north) and 4 Vine Cottages (south) is a house that has been divided, originally built in the late 15th century to early 16th century as a Wealden type hall-house with a cross wing on the north side. It was partly rebuilt in the mid to late 17th century when the open hall was replaced by a two-storey block. The exterior features exposed timber framing and plaster, with an old tile half-hipped roof and a wide red brick stack near the center. The north end has curved braces on the first floor, which was originally jettied, and there is a 17th-century door surround towards the north.

The building has three 3-light casements on both the ground and first floors, with the first-floor windows likely dating from the late 17th to early 18th century, while the larger ground floor casements are from the 19th century. The north elevation displays curved first-floor braces and a filled-in 17th-century window on the east ground floor. There is a modern ground floor rear extension. Inside, there is painted text from Proverbs Chapter 31, verse 30 on the chimney breast of the south ground floor room, with lettering that can be dated to the second quarter of the 17th century.

The later two-storey addition on the south, known as 4 Vine Cottages, is likely from the 17th century and features a timber frame. The ground floor is weatherboarded while the first floor is plastered, topped with an old tile roof. It has two windows on both the ground and first floors, all 3-light casements, except for the north ground floor window which has 17th-century or early 18th-century wooden frames. There is also a modern rear extension.
