Description
The New River Company property markers, dating from around 1837 to 1856, are made of cast iron and are located in OS Field 44 in Hertford. There are two types of markers present. The first type is a 'double plate' marker, which features an arched head, a projecting rim, and raised cast lettering that reads 'NRC' (New River Company). There are two of these markers fixed at an angle in the ground. The second type is a 'milestone', which is slightly tapered with a curved top and has raised cast lettering 'NRC' on one side, also fixed in the ground. The specific locations of the markers are as follows: the first 'double plate' is at NGR TL 3393 1361, the second 'double plate' is at NGR TL 3393 1355, and the 'milestone' is at NGR TL 3388 1371. The new cut to the Lee on the King's Meads was made around 1837, although the Gauge House was not constructed until 1856, suggesting that these property markers were installed during that period. They do not appear to follow a specific pattern in their arrangement.
