Description

The New River Company property markers, dating from around 1837 to 1856, are made of cast iron and are located in OS Fields 41 and 44 in Hertford. There are two types of markers: one is a 'plate' with an arched head, a projecting rim, and raised cast lettering on the face that reads 'NRC' (New River Company). The other type is a 'milestone', which is slightly tapered with a curved top and also features raised cast lettering 'NRC' on one side.

In OS Field 41, the following markers are present: - 'Milestone' at NGR TL 3403 1367 - 'Milestone' at NGR TL 3405 1368 - 'Milestone' at NGR TL 3409 1368 - 'Plate' at NGR TL 3412 1368 - 'Plate' at NGR TL 3411 1372 - 'Plate' at NGR TL 3413 1372 - 'Plate' at NGR TL 3410 1382 - 'Plate' at NGR TL 3412 1385 - 'Plate' at NGR TL 3410 1361 - 'Plate' at NGR TL 3412 1361 - 'Plate' at NGR TL 3414 1361 - 'Plate' at NGR TL 3405 1360 - 'Milestone' at NGR TL 3406 1355 - 'Plate' at NGR TL 3414 1358 - 'Milestone' at NGR TL 3430 1364 - 'Plate' at NGR TL 3433 1365 - 'Plate' at NGR TL 3444 1375

In OS Field 44, there is one 'Milestone' at NGR TL 3406 1353. The new cut to the River Lee on King's Meads was made around 1837, while the Gauge House was constructed in 1856. The property markers likely date from this period and do not appear to follow a specific pattern.
