Description
The Corn Barn and Implement Shed at Clintons, located 40 metres northwest of the house in Little Hadham, is a 17th-century barn with an adjoining shed from the 18th or 19th century. The tall five-bay barn faces south and is constructed with a timber frame, weatherboarded on a red brick base. It has a steep gabled roof that is currently covered in corrugated iron. The central bay features opposed double doors, which are now blocked on the south side. Inside, there are heavy principal rafters supported by two butt-jointed purlins on each slope, with staggered joints. A collar is positioned just above the top purlin, and there are long queen struts and long curved braces connecting the tie beams to the wall-posts. Short curved braces are also present on either side of the door opening. The interior of the barn is now filled with corn silos. Adjoining the barn on the east is a lower, three-bay open-fronted shed that also faces south. This shed is timber-framed, weatherboarded, and has a steep gabled roof, with some brick walling in the rear wall. The buildings are part of a group at Clintons manor.
