Description

The River Lea gazebo, along with iron railings and a watergate at the rear of 63 High Street, dates from the mid-18th century and was restored in the 1980s. This two-storey structure is built of red brick with yellow brick corners and features plat bands at wall plate level, topped with a parapet that has stone coping. The roof is hipped and pyramidal, covered with old tiles and adorned with half round ridge tiles and a wooden ball finial.

The west wall of the gazebo extends into a tall red brick boundary wall that separates Nos 63 and 65. On the ground floor, there is a single sash window with exposed boxes and small panes facing the river, along with a modern window on the east side. The first floor features a canted oriel bay window overlooking the river, with a weatherboarded spandrel, and three sash windows with glazing bars, a moulded wood cornice, and a parapet.

The north elevation includes a recessed half-glazed door with two flush lower panels, surrounded by a moulded architrave, a plain frieze, and a flat moulded door hood supported by cut profiled consoles. This door provides access to the first-floor room via eight stone steps, which are flanked by wrought-iron handrails.

Restored iron railings run along the river wall, connecting the gazebo to a watergate approximately 15 meters to the east. The watergate is a single-storey timber-framed structure with weatherboarded sides and a weatherboarded panel above the opening to the river, supported on curved brackets. It also features a moulded wood cornice and a hipped pyramidal roof with half round ridge tiles. Both the gazebo and the watergate were restored between 1982 and 1984.
